Malaysia Airlines has one of Asia's best safety records

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Malaysia Airlines , the operator of Flight MH370 that went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on Saturday, has established a record as one of the Asia-Pacific's best full-service carriers in terms of safety and service despite some recent financial problems.

The Kuala Lumpur-based carrier competes with AirAsia domestically, and with the likes of AirAsia X , Emirates , Singapore Airlines , Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific <0293.HK> on international routes.
The airline, part of the Oneworld alliance that includes British Airways and Qantas, has 88 aircraft in its fleet, including Airbus A330s and A380s, and Boeing 777-200s and 737s, according to its website.
They include 15 777-200ERs, one of which was involved in Saturday's disappearance. These aircraft are deployed on its long-range services within the Asia-Pacific and to Europe.

Its fleet of 777-200ERs has an average age of 14.2 years, according to airfleets.com, an authoritative website that tracks airline fleets, making it one of the oldest such fleets of 777-200s in the world.
Malaysia Airlines gave the registration number of the aircraft as 9M-MRO, indicating the plane is 11 years and eight months old. It was powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines, an airline official confirmed by telephone from Kuala Lumpur.

It was unclear if the age of the plane had any bearing on its disappearance, given authorities were still trying to determine the flight's presumed crash site in the South China Sea on Saturday.
The airline was set to order Airbus A330 or A350 aircraft to start replacing some of its older 777s from 2016, with the management having identified fleet replacement as a key plank of its plan to turn around the loss-making airline.

In February, the airline reported a net loss of 343.4 million ringgit for the three months ended December 2013, its fourth consecutive quarterly loss.

Its full-year loss of 1.17 billion ringgit was nearly three times higher than in 2012.
The last fatal incident involving a Malaysia Airlines aircraft took place on September 15, 1995, when 34 people died after a Fokker 50 crashed on approach to Tawau, a town in the Eastern Malaysian state of Sabah.

Before that, in 1977, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-200 crashed in Tanjung Kupang, in Johor state, killing all 100 people on board. That was the deadliest crash to date involving a Malaysian aircraft.
The Boeing 777 is the U.S. plane maker's most popular wide-body aircraft. The first models to be produced were the 777-200 in 1995 and the 777-200ER two years later, followed by the 777-300 in 1998. Boeing then produced the longer-range 777-300ER and 777-200LR variants in 2004 and 2006 respectively.

The Boeing 777-200ER has a range of 7,725 miles (14,305 km) and a cruising speed of Mach 0.84, or about 640 miles per hour, according to Boeing.

The Boeing 777 has one of the best safety records of any commercial aircraft in service.
The first serious incident took place in January 2008, when a British Airways 777-200ER crash-landed just short of London's Heathrow airport, injuring 45 people.

Both aircraft were written off.

In July 2011, an Egypt Air 777-200ER had a fire in the cockpit while parked at a gate in Cairo and was evacuated without injuries.

The only fatal crash so far came on July 6 last year when Asiana Airlines flight 214 struck a seawall on landing in San Francisco. Of 307 people aboard, three died and more than 180 were injured.
The crash investigation, while still ongoing, has so far indicated no mechanical failure and focused on the pilots' failure to recognize that the plane was flying too low and too slowly as it approached the runway.

#PrayForMH370: Search will continue into the night, say authorities

UPDATE [10:52pm]: The search for MH370 will continue into the night, say authorities. The Transport Ministry and the Department of Civil Aviation said the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) are “committed” to continue plying the inky waters between Malaysia and Vietnam until rescue efforts are officially called off.

“This is our commitment. We will go on around the clock,” said RMAF director-general of operations and exercise Major General Datuk Affendi Buang at a press conference at the Sama-Sama Hotel here.
It has been over 20 hours since the plane last communicated with the Subang Air Traffic Control, and many continue to speculate the plane has crashed in the Gulf of Thailand, some 250km south of Vietnam.

The last coordinates where the aircraft was last heard from at 1.30am this morning puts it somewhere 120 nautical miles off Kota Baru.

Breaking News: #MH370 Malaysia Airlines missing flight : Updated: 1645/08March2014

A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew went missing over the South China Sea on Saturday, presumed crashed, as ships and planes from countries closest to its flight path scoured a large search area for any wreckage.

Vietnamese state media, quoting a senior naval official, had reported that the Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had crashed off south Vietnam. Malaysia's transport minister later denied any crash scene had been identified.

"We are doing everything in our power to locate the plane.

We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein told reporters near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
"We are looking for accurate information from the Malaysian military. They are waiting for information from the Vietnamese side," he said.

Vietnamese Admiral Ngo Van Phat later qualified his earlier remarks about a crash site having been identified and told Reuters he was referring to a presumed location beneath the plane's flight path, using information supplied by Malaysia.

A crash, if confirmed, would likely mark the U.S.-built Boeing 777-200ER airliner's deadliest incident since entering service 19 years ago.

The plane disappeared without giving a distress signal - a chilling echo of an Air France flight that crashed into the South Atlantic on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 people on board. It vanished for hours before wreckage was found.

Breaking News: Anwar found guilty of sodomy, jailed five years

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's plan to win the Kajang by-election and become the Selangor menteri besar was scuttled by the Court of Appeal that overturned his acquittal for sodomy, and sentenced him to five years jail.

There was an uproar in the courtroom when the sentence was read out, overturning the High Court's earlier decision to acquit him for sodomy.

It was an unanimous decision.

Judge Datuk Balia Yusof Wahi, who is leading a three-man bench, has yet to pass sentence, which is a jail term of up to 20 years.

The bench delivered their decision in 90 minutes after hearing submissions from both parties yesterday and today.

Anwar’s defence team then sought an adjournment until next week to allow them to prepare for mitigation.

His lawyer Karpal pleaded that every opportunity should be given to his client.
"On Monday Anwar will have to be present in Parliament as the King will open the House and on Tuesday he will deliver his speech as opposition leader," Karpal said.

But Balia insisted that Karpal Singh, who is leading Anwar’s defence, must submit mitigating circumstances in an hour’s time.

This led Anwar to react angrily by standing up and shouting at the decision.
“Just do it now!” he exclaimed loudly, in apparent reference to the sentencing.
"It's all over again, they want to put me in the lock-up, that is why they want to continue with the mitigation," said Anwar.

A tearful Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, along with daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar, rushed to his side in an attempt to calm Anwar.

However, Shafee objected to the request. He said the appeal has not been rushed and mitigation must be done today.

"I am equally unprepared, but ready to make submission," he said.

He said he was sure Anwar would appeal to the Federal Court.
He said it was the fault of Anwat that this case had been delayed since July last year.
Karpal said Shafee was speaking with a forked tongue as he would not act in this manner if he was a lawyer representing a client.

"This is the problem of appointing a mercenary as DPP," Karpal thundered, followed by a shouting match between the two.
Karpal told Shafee to sit down as he was holding the floor.

Balia then said he would give the defence and prosecution an hour to prepare their submissions.
Karpal attempted to address the bench, but the judges just walked out.
With this verdict, Anwar's political career looks to have ended. He will be disqualified from all his political positions and will not be the PKR candidate in the Kajang by-election to be held later this month.

There was further tension in the courtroom and those in the public gallery shouted at the bench, causing the judge to adjourn proceedings for one hour.
In an immediate response, PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli said: "The worst feeling is that I am not shocked and was prepared mentally for this round of injustice."
Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim expressed his "regret over the Court of Appeal's decision. Another dark episode in the country's judiciary institution."

Former Bersih co-chair Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said through her Twitter account, that she was shocked and called on Anwar to stay strong

"I can't believe this is happening!" she said.

DAP's Elizabeth Wong, who is Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman, said: "Shocking. Court of Appeals overturns High Court decision to acquit @anwaribrahim. Where is Justice?"

Batu MP Tian Chua tweeted: "Najib has declared war against Pakatan Rakyat; the people are ready for an all out uprising!"

Ahead of the decision, this afternoon police tightened security outside the court and closed the road in front of the Palace of Justice (PoJ) in Precinct 2, Putrajaya. The main compound outside the PoJ was also cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.

Media personnel were issued passes to enter the courtroom, while access was limited for visitors and supporters. There were at least 50 media personnel waiting outside the courtroom.

Police presence was limited, with groups of 4-5 personnel posted at strategic locations, including the PoJ entrance, in the main lobby and outside the courtroom. – March 7, 2014.

Justin Bieber tattoos revealed IN FULL

Pop star Justin Bieber has been forced to reveal each and every one of his body inkings after his recent stint in jail. The 20-year-old star can be seen in newly-released images where he shows off his permanent markings for the Miami Beach Police Department, evidently using the snapshots to help identify the famous musician.

The Baby hitmaker has been landing himself in trouble recently and was even arrested for driving under the influence this January in Florida during what appeared to be a drag race between a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. And following video footage of him doing push-ups in his cell, which was unveiled last week, Justin’s etchings have been documented for the world to see.

Lifting up his black hooded top he posed to show off a tiny tattoo on his midriff, at the same time flaunting his underwear branding high above his trousers. Other details include a native Indian head and writing from the Bible on his shoulder blades, plus Roman numerals and a crown feature on opposite ends of his décolletage, which also boated two hefty gold chains.

The Canadian crooner’s religious marking didn’t end there as he boasted a picture in the form of what much of the world recognises as Jesus Christ. Across his sleeves a huge eye, sabre-tooth tiger, and the word ‘Believe’ stemming from the title of his album, tour and movie of the same name. Justin spend 10 hours in Miami-Dade County Jail on January 23 and he shared a cell with R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff, which was made apparent under Florida's public record law.

As well as DUI, the heartthrob faces charges of resisting arrest and driving with an expired licence. His friend Khalil was also detained after reportedly being found to be under the influence of alcohol and illegal substances.

According to TMZ, the State Attorney was prepared to drop resisting arrest and DUI charges if Justin agreed to undergo random testing for substance abuse and completed 40 hours of community service. But sources have said he has decided to reject the offer.

Anwar fails in final bid to stop Shafee from prosecuting sodomy appeal

Putrajaya's appeal in the sodomy acquittal of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will go on as scheduled after the opposition leader failed in his final bid to stop Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah from leading the prosecution team at the Court of Appeal.

A five-man Federal Court bench chaired by Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong this afternoon which dismissed Anwar's stay application said there were no exceptional circumstances.

Hamid said the basis of the application was that Shafee’s appointment was a conflict of interest and that he was not a fit and proper person.

"We find no merit in the application and there is no reason to disturb the refusal of the Court of Appeal to grant Anwar a stay," he said of the unanimous decision.

Shafee submitted that the stay should be refused as it was to delay the public prosecutor's sodomy appeal. Read full article
