Royal wedding: A millennium of marriages (Prince William to Kate Middleton)It is said that at the wedding of the Prince of Wales – the future King Edward VII – to Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, a royal personage from a German statelet looked at all the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas around her at the wedding breakfast at Windsor Castle, turned to her son and asked: “Tell me: who are all these low people?”
We can be sure that such old-world hauteur will be absent from next Friday’s more demotic celebrations of the royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. We must hope, too, that the marriage of our future king and queen will be less troubled than poor Alexandra of Denmark’s was. more
